Tangoed Up In Blues - San Francisco - February 24-26, 2006

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I download & print flyers?

A: Sure: a quarter-page b&w flyer, and a color business card. If you want some of the business card flyers, just let us know.

Q: How can I get housing?

A: There will be plenty of housing available. Please register online and answer the housing questions, or simply e-mail housing@bluestango.com with your request.

Q: When is registration open?

A: A limited number of $50 early-bird full weekend passes (29 left) are available now until Friday, January 27. The price of the workshop afterwards is likely to be at least $15 higher. These passes include 10-12 60-minute classes, over 22 hours of dancing and the small group guided practicas on Sunday.

If you live in the Bay Area, please sign up by bringing cash or checks to the Cell Space Alternative Milonga in SF on 1/25, or to Friday Night Blues on 1/20, R.A. Blues.

If you do not, you can register online using PayPal. If you live out-of-town and would prefer to pay by check, you can mail a check for $50 (postmarked by 1/25 for the early-bird pass) to Beyond Blues, 1362 Moonlight Circle, Milpitas CA 95035.

Q: What is the schedule? What airport should I fly into?

A: Here is the tentative schedule.

If you want to enjoy the Bay Area for a few extra days, we recommend the Cell Space alternative milonga on Wednesdays in SF, the 9:20 Special for swing dancing on Thursdays in SF, the Orange Tango Practica on Mondays in Berkeley.

Either San Francisco (SFO), Oakland (OAK) or San Jose (SJC) will work in that order, and we will do our best to arrange pick-ups. SFO & OAK are also connected by BART, SJC is not. Budget-conscious shoppers may want to take a look at Sacramento (SMF), especially for some great Southwest rates from Portland.

Q: What is "Tangoed Up In Blues"?

A: The term refers to the unique idea of a workshop combining classes on blues dancing, Argentine tango and dance fundamentals relevant to both styles. This workshop emerged from the heavy cross-over between our dance communities in Portland, San Francisco and other places, and now it serves to further promote this cross-over.

Q: What are the goals of TUIB?

A: For 2006, our intention is to provide a coherent and integrated perspective on blues and tango dancing, focusing on specific content areas in each to allow for greater clarity and depth of discourse.

The overall goals of the festival remain...

  1. to explore the similarities and differences between tango and blues dancing
    • note - this does not mean creating a fusion dance! we're not opposed to the idea, it's just not a goal. we feel like any milonguero or dedicated blues dancer can actually learn a lot about their own dance by exploring a different form, even if they never dance the other on a regular basis.
  2. to explore the tension between new and old in both blues and tango, in a friendly and constructive environment.
  3. to promote lots of great blues & tango dancing

Q: How did Tangoed Up In Blues get started?

A: By accident, really. Beyond Blues was invited to co-promote a blues workshop in Portland in December of 2004 with Dylan McCann's Fusion-PDX (which puts on monthly lindy/blues/tango dances). We held it at Tango Berretín, the home of Alex Krebs and many tango events. Dylan suggested we have Alex teach his "tango for swing dancers" class, so we had six blues classes and one tango class.

Richard Fourzon from Santa Rosa was at that Portland workshop and was inspired to bring the idea back home to Northern California. He coined the term "Tangoed Up In Blues" and Beyond Blues put together a workshop with eleven different blues & tango instructors. The 2005 San Francisco festival was so much fun that we are now planning new events in San Francisco, Portland and who knows where else?
